As a third year student in the Honours Biology and Psychology program at McMaster University, I am greatly intrigued by areas of study that happen to draw upon both these subjects. It was in the pursuit to further my understanding in such areas that I happened to approach Dr. Paul Andrews. With his assistance, I was able to design a social experiment that examined the effect of complex analytical problems on an individual’s mood in order to understand depression within a social context, and argue that depression may in fact be an evolved response to such tasks. From my experiences in the Evolutionary Ecology of Health Lab, I aspire to acquire an alternative approach to understanding mental health and its underlying intricacies- an approach that I am able to draw upon and apply in my future endeavors in the field of health and medicine.
